Making Christmas Cards using English Newspaper

There are lots of greeting cards messages below. You can change them or you can make totally your own message, of course.

Then, find proper sizes and fonts of the letters using the English Newspaper (Korea Herald), cut them, and decorate on your own cards.

I wish you have a time to think of special people around you, writing Christmas cards.

What to write in a Christmas card

  1. May your Christmas be filled with lots of happiness, peace and love... and lots of presents :)
  2. If you're feeling warm today, it's from all the love we're sending your way. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
  3. Love, joy and peace are the ingredients for a wonderful Christmas. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!
  4. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! May it bring you joy, happiness and everything else you deserve.
  5. It's the time of candles, cakes, songs, reindeer, carols, laughter – and most importantly LOVE. Merry Christmas.
  6. May God bless your home with peace, joy and love. Have a merry Christmas!

What to write in a New Year card

  1. Wishing you a super-duper extra luck Happy New Years! Here's hoping that all your dreams come true.
  2. Wishing you a happy and magical New Year. We hope it brings you lots of joy and happiness. All the best.
  3. Wishing you a happy New Years. May it be all that you hope it will be! All the best
  4. Wishing you a happy New Years. May it be all that you hope it will be! All the best

the song, '엄마로 산다는 것은' for my students

Can my students understand the meaning of these lyrics, pondering upon their moms' lives which I could understand a little bit while taking care of my daughters...

My stroke of insight

I like her idea, especially the last paragraph she is delivering in the TED.

So who are we? We are the life-force power of the universe, with manual dexterity and two cognitive minds. And we have the power to choose, moment by moment, who and how we want to be in the world.Right here, right now, I can step into the consciousness of my right hemisphere, where we are. I am the life-force power of the universe. I am the life-force power of the 50 trillion beautiful molecular geniuses that make up my form, at one with all that is. Or, I can choose to step into the consciousness of my left hemisphere, where I become a single individual, a solid. Separate from the flow, separate from you. I am Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor: intellectual, neuroanatomist. These are the "we" inside of me. Which would you choose? Which do you choose? And when? I believe that the more time we spend choosing to run the deep inner-peace circuitry of our right hemispheres, the more peace we will project into the world, and the more peaceful our planet will be.

DOJO CLASS

DOJO class (7, 8 class 0f the 2nd grade)

The website, DOJO is very convenient for me because I can give points to the groups, using timer.

Students also like it because the groups' characters are very cute. They are actually doing their best to avoid getting minus point due to talking in their class, no homework, and so on.

I can send an invitation to students' parents or coworkers to give students points together.

Twin Forks - Cross My Mind

The song I can hear in my favorite drama these days, '괜찮아 사랑이야'.

From this semester, I teach English to students of medium-low level.
I know it would be effective to teach English using various materials and games for them.
However, I always feel lack of time to explain grammar points and words in detail because it takes more time to understand them than those in advance classes. Moreover, students feel stressed or uncomfortable about listening and speaking in English.

This contradictory situation is what I have to solve this semester as a teacher.

Feedback from Students' Presentation of U.S.A. Traveling

During the second week of June, I had 4 hours of presentation classes and most of the presentation were impressive.

I set 2 rules and asked my students to keep the rules - have a polite attitude as speakers and listeners and do not read any sentences, using only memos with key words.

Students made various materials for their presentations with powerpoint or prezi and they were amazing. Also, their speaking was much more fluent than I had expected. So, I feel sad about the reality high school students and English teachers are facing to, in which students should study focusing mostly on reading and grammar.

Through this activity, I have learnt that I will try to have more time to do activities with my students and I need to inform specific details about an activity before doing it for students not to be confused about it. Moreover, I shouldn't forget that all the activities need to be related to any English learning points so that students can get something new from the activities.

These are some materials students made for their presentations.

Notice for your presentation in May (Good Luck!)

To the 2nd graders in Theresa Girls' High School

  • You already finished to put the puzzles of U.S.A. map together and chose one state where your group want to go.
  • Now, for your presentation, search flights to go to the state - take a memo about the flights' schedule and fare.
  • Choose more than 5 tourist attraction spots - during your presentation, please show the places' pictures and explain why you choose them  or why the place is worth to visit.
  • I hope every student has a chance to speak in English in front of students.
  • Please have a fun, doing this activity.

Lateral Thinking

While I was preparing for my English class, I found out a fantastic noun phrase, lateral thinking. I like the phrase which means the way of solving problems through an indirect and creative approach.

Finding the phrase's meaning in Google, I entered into this website(Lateral Thinking Puzzlesand there are some interesting questions with which students can demonstrate their own creativity.

Here are some examples.

1. You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:
1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Knowing that there can only be one passenger in your car, whom would you choose?
The old lady of course! After helping the old lady into the car, you can give your keys to your friend, and wait with your perfect partner for the bus.

2. Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter, a lorry driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?

The fireman is the only man in the room. The rest of the poker players are women.

3. The Boxes
There are three boxes. One is labeled "APPLES" another is labeled "ORANGES". The last one is labeled "APPLES AND ORANGES". You know that each is labeled incorrectly. You may ask me to pick one fruit from one box which you choose.
How can you label the boxes correctly?
Pick from the one labeled "Apples & Oranges". This box must contain either only apples or only oranges.
E.g. if you find an Orange, label the box Orange, then change the Oranges box to Apples, and the Apples box to "Apples & Oranges."

Guessing 13 Most common superstitions

The Origins of the 13 Most Common Superstitions

from the website, RANKER (interesting to look around :-))

something to read from New York Times

Today's article for speaking with Mr. Son

Megan Huntsman was arrested for leaving 7 bodies of  babies in cardboard boxes and whether the babies' parents are Huntsman and her husbands is not identified yet. A lot of cases related to killing children or babies in Korea as well as in other countries make me unpleasant.

Look back at the past and other trivial things

While trying to find interesting materials I will show to my students, I searched my portable drive to see the photos taken in California. It was taken only 2 months ago but for me, it seemed that it was more than one year ago. I want to go back to the past.

- Most of the teachers in the 2nd grade agreed to quit teaching the textbook and teach the students with workbooks written only for the university entrance exam. It was not a good news for me because it is not easy for me to do several activities utilizing the book. I'm not sure that students' English will be improved only when they study with those kinds of books. I think it is not a learning but just a practice to solve questions.

However, it is true that most high schools don't use their textbooks and teach other workbooks. The situation Korean schools face for students' English goes to a strange way.

- Students, of course, liked the activity 'correcting the order of comics'. At first, they arranged the order. Then, I let them make a story with the pieces of the paper and do storytelling. The students did much better than what I expected. I know the reason why they did well. "Because they did what they like and want"

- The club ,which 5 of TTP teachers including me organized for the education focused on students' creativity and personality, was passed through Busan School Board's evaluation. kkk

Our goal is to develop the materials we learned during TTP course taking them out of our notes and using at our classrooms. Our first meeting will be held on the 17th evening!!

- The schedule on which TTP teachers have an open class from May was released and I still have no idea about it. ㅜㅜ

You Tube video for the text, 'we are what we eat'

Correcting the order of comics

Studying Lesson 2, I found out that students really really like Naver Webtoon series, especially "Cheese in the trap" and "Tower of God". So, for the activity to wrap up Lesson 2, I printed out the first chapter of "Cheese in the trap" in an English Version on the website, Batoto(http://www.batoto.net), cut into 8 pieces of paper, and changed the order so that my students can read them and guess the right order. I hope they find it interesting and useful for their English.

Warm spring, April

It's a warm spring and my clothes become lighter. Finishing 5th period with the 2nd graders, I am staying at English Room for a while to have a rest, feeling spring winds through windows. This place makes me comfortable even though there isn't a big difference to the teachers' room.

Yesterday, I got an official document from the Busan School Board that teachers having participated in 3+3 or 5+1 course in BUFS should have an open class in May or June. Most of the teachers in TTP got stressful about it and shared our opinion on our band. Some teachers decided to have the same class with the one he or she had in BUFS even though the textbook is different with the one their students are studying. kkk.

I am in the same situation and I didn't decide about it yet- whether I prepare for a totally different class or not. However, I chose the date for the open class, 19th Monday in May. I want to invite some professors in BUFS who taught me a lot for 5 months but they can't come because of lots of class schedules, maybe. :-)

Right before, I had a short discussion time with my students about comics (they are useful or noneducational) for the motivation of Lesson 2. They naturally started to discuss it and some students enjoyed to debate and show their opinions. I was very moved.

Teachers can try and make changes among students, but students' positive reactions also give teachers a lot of power and a bigger change them.

A Simple Survey for feedback from my students

3 weeks have passed since the first semester started, but I'm still busy in preparing for classes and making some documents for my tasks in my department.

Anyway, I finished Lesson 1, trying to change the ways of teaching, wanted to know students' opinion, and did small, simple survey above.

The outstanding reactions were...

- the speed of reading and interpreting textbook was too fast.
- at first, couldn't adapt herself to the class in English but now like it.
- want more games and more cultural activities
- more academic reading materials

Even though it is difficult for me as a teacher to make my students 100% satisfied, I want to be a teacher who keeps trying for new things.

+ self- feedback about Celebrity Heads

My students and I played 'celebrity heads' but the numbers of the students were about 31. It was very difficult to manage students and help all of them to participate in the activity.

One more thing, students were using only the verb 'be' to ask questions. It needs for me to teach some possible asking formats, using various verbs.

Information Transfer Activity using Creatly

Dictogloss images from my students

They did a better job than what I had expected.
The students who were accustomed to listening lecture styles- just listening grammar explanation and writing down important points on their textbooks sometimes feel stressful on doing something new. But I believe creating something new by themselves can improve their real English skill even it is not suitable for the current entrance exam.

Frozen OST

The songs my daughters and my students love the most these days.
I believe Pop Songs have a power to help people to get interested in English and learn English words unconsciously. Even my daughters learned the phrases- let it go, build a snowman something like that.

A New Start at Theresa Girls' High School

The time for the course 5+1 had gone much more quickly than I had expected and now I'm in Theresa Girls High School. Most of the teachers I liked to get along with transferred to other schools ㅠㅠ and my department and year was totally changed. It will take some time for me to adapt to all the changes.

Yesterday, I cleaned my study room, arranging most of the hand-outs and books I had studied in the course in BUFS. I really enjoyed the leisurely time for learning and liked the easy and sometimes lazy schedule- I didn't have to work until 10 p.m and go to school till 8 a.m..

I feel it's time to use my Improved English, educational skills and useful materials for my students as well as myself. I don't want to complain of everyday's business. Instead, I hope I will do it to the best of my ability : )

+ Beautiful time in U.S.A.
